Sportive organisers Uk Cycling Events have offered Velo South charity riders a free entry to one of their remaining 2018 sportives.
15,000 cyclists were left disappointed last week as organisers of Velo South - the hotly anticipated closed-roads sportive in Sussex - were forced to cancel the event at short notice owing to dire weather forecasts for the weekend. Many of the cyclists were using the event to raise funds for charitable causes. To add insult to injury the forecast gales failed to materialise.
But charity cyclists now have a second chance to meet their fundraising commitments, thanks to UK Cycling Events' offer of a free place on one of their 12 remaining sportives in 2018.
The sportives on offer include the Wiggle South Downs 100 on Sunday October 14, a century ride that also features a timed hill climb on a section of the course closed to traffic.
A UK Cycling Events spokesperson said: "We recognise that many riders will be bitterly disappointed by the cancellation of Velo South, but rather than give up fundraising, we're keen to make it possible for riders to fulfill their charity pledge.
"We can't offer fully closed roads, but we can provide a safe, friendly and rewarding challenge for riders who don't want to give up on their goals.''
All events are fully supported with an experienced event team, route signage, medical and mechanical support, fully stocked feed stations and a finisher's medal.
To claim a free spot at a remaining 2018 event, charity riders can complete an online registration form at UK Cycling Events.
Non-charity riders can also benefit, with UK Cycling Events offering a 20% discount on entry prices for a limited period: this is the form for non-charity riders. All entrants will need to provide evidence of their confirmed entry to Velo South.
