How far north can you cycle in 24 hours?

The North Race, a new time trial challenge by Restrap, aims to find out just that. Starting from Restrap's headquarters in Leeds, the aim is to see how far north you can ride within 24 hours.

It's an independent challenge and riders can start whenever they like, submitting evidence of their ride on an event website.

"We invite you to plan and execute a time-trial as far north (by latitude) as you can within 24 hours starting from the Restrap factory in Leeds," say Restrap.

"Balance marginal gains, comfort over distance, route-planning and minimal stop time to push yourself as far as possible within the timeframe."

The rules are straightforward:

• This challenge is self supported, any aid and resources utilised during the ride must be accessible to the general public or carried by the rider from the outset. Private shelter, stashed gear, resupplies or mechanical support are not permitted.

• This is an efficiency over distance game. The aim is to reach as far north by latitude as possible, this can be on/off road as long as it follows public rights of access. No hedge jumping into private land or riding on footpaths.

• The time limit is 24 hours and the clock never stops, even when you do. Your submitted activity shouldn't go beyond this time, if it does, the result coordinates will reflect this.

Already there's a mark to beat: Josh Reid was first to tackle the challenge, riding 350km north (505km in total) on 9 April 2024.

The launch of the challenge coincides with Restrap releasing a new hydration backpack, which Josh wore on his ride. He ended up just short of Aberdeen: a very impressive effort. You can check out his ride on Strava here.

Fancy a crack? Restrap will award £500 in vouchers each time the record is broken. Group attempts are permitted; a separate leaderboard will be published for team efforts.
