This year's Mallorca 312 sportive has been postponed and will now take place on 10 October 2020.

Originally scheduled for 25 April, the Mallorca 312 is the latest big-name sportive to fall prey to the coronavirus outbreak that has caused the cancellation of sporting events around the world.

A statement from the organisers says "Mallorca 312 Organization has been working and analyzing the different scenarios that allow us to develop the race in the safest way possible by protecting the health of all the participants. After the latest events in the context of the CoVid-19, the WHO, the Health Institutions and Authorities recommendations about the convenience of celebrating the event on April 25 as planned, we are forced to postpone the race.

"The new date for the 11th edition of the Mallorca 312 has been postponed to October 10, 2020. The objective is none other than to offer our registrants the possibility of enjoying this day on the calendar, and ensure their attendance at a safe cycling event, and thus collaborate as an Organization in this international sporting event, thus preventing the virus from spreading."

This year's edition of the Mallorca 312 was a sell-out, and all entrants will receive automatic entry to the new date in October.

Participants who are unable to attend the new date have several options:

- Transfer entry to any other Milestone Series event: Eifel 205 (August 22) or Bästad 198 (September 13).

- Transfer your bib number to a friend or family member

- Sell your bib number to someone else via a designated marketplace set up by the event organisers.

Although disappointing, the postponement is unlikely to come as a surprise to most entrants given the severity of the coronavirus situation. Looking on the bright side, a new date has been announced quickly - and the prospect of riding around Mallorca in balmy October conditions is certainly something to look forward to.

Tour de Yorkshire Ride postponed

One of the UK's most popular early-season sportives, the Tour de Yorkshire Ride, has also been postponed.

Originally scheduled to take place in Leeds on 3 May alongside the Tour de Yorkshire pro race, the organisers are currently working on finding a new date for the sportive.

Entrants who can not attend the new date, or the 2021 edition, will be eligible for a refund.

In a statement the organisers confirmed: "Over the past few weeks we have been working alongside Welcome To Yorkshire, fellow organisers, medical experts and all our amazing stakeholders to fully understand the potential impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on our event. Unfortunately, the situation has become more serious and today it was announced that the Pro Tour has been postponed with a new date still to be confirmed. Alongside this, the sportive we were all looking forward to has been similarly affected.

"We're sure you share our disappointment regarding this unavoidable situation, especially as you have been training hard to be able to complete the challenge. At this stage our contingency plans are focused on looking for new dates for you. This is complicated as the event has a global impact (the Ride is directly linked to the Tour de Yorkshire Pro Ride which makes it so unique). We will keep you informed with the options for you as soon as we can."

A further update is expected by Thursday 9 April.
