Geraint Thomas is the new favourite for the Tour de France after showing his strength in the first summit finish of this year's race. Although Thomas only put five seconds into his main General Classification rivals on the unbelievably steep La Planche des Belles Filles climb, the manner in which he did so was impressive enough to suggest he is in good shape to defend his 2018 Tour title.

Bookmakers had rated Thomas as the 3/1 second favourite heading into Stage six of this year's Tour but he is now a top price of 11/10 (bet £10 to make £11 profit). Bernal Egan, his Team Ineos rival for GC honours, had been 7/4 favourite for the race but is now out to 4/1.

Thibaut Pinot remains third favourite at 10/1, finishing just behind Thomas and with Julian Alaphilippe. Jakob Fuslgang was five seconds further back in a group also containing Nairo Quintana, Emanuel Buchmann, Mikel Landa, Richie Porte and Egan Bernal.

Roman Bardet was the big loser of the day and is now out to 100/1 for Tour victory while Michael Woods was expected to be suited by the climb but lost 18 seconds to Thomas and is now a 400/1 shot and Tejay van Garderen was again found wanting and is 1000/1 to be wearing the yellow jersey in Paris.
