We like a nice lace-up cycling shoe at Sportive.com, and so do UK brand Quoc. You may know them from their classic-looking Night road shoe, but their latest model, the Weekend, looks set to take things in a more versatile, urban direction.

Just launched on Kickstarter, the Weekend features recessed soles for lcipless pedal compatibility - while being just as happy pounding the streets when off the bike. Neat features include a subtly reflective scuffguard, Quoc's patented elastic lace system and water-resistant uppers, but the Weekend's party trick is the use of algae - that's right, the green stuff that grows on ponds - in the shoe's sole and mid section.

Quoc haven't just filled a shoe with pondweed in some sort of schoolyard prank; the material comes courtesy of US brand Bloom, who skim excess plant biomass from the water surface and turn it into a performance foam.

"For the past few years, we've been making city cycling footwear that works on and off the bike, helping riders around the world transition from pedal to pavement in style and comfort," says founder and designer Quoc Pham.

"With The Weekend, we wanted to redefine the casual cycling shoe. Which is why we partnered with Bloom, a company in Mississippi that transforms green water into clean water to make performance foams. Which means that for every Weekend we make, 395 half litre bottles of clean water will have been returned to the environment."

It sounds impressive, and we like the looks too.
