A rider who collapsed and died during Sunday's Prudential RideLondon 100 sportive has been named as Nigel Buchan-Swanson.

Mr Buchan-Swanson, 69, from Chichester, had a cardiac arrest about 56 miles into the sportive, which was completed by 26,740 riders. He was married with three children and six grandchildren. Originally born in South Africa, he had lived in England for many years, having worked for IBM as a business controls manager before taking retirement in August 2012.

He had been raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and the total raised on his JustGiving fundraising page was over £3,625 at the time of writing, far exceeding his £200 target.

His wife Deborah told the BBC: "He was a very experienced cyclist and died doing something he loved. Nigel was a much loved husband, father and grandfather."

Hayley Short, head of challenge events at Macmillan, said: "We are deeply saddened to hear about the death of Nigel Buchan-Swanson in the 2018 Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100. The money he raised for Macmillan will make a real difference to people living with cancer, and we are extremely grateful for his support. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends."

Mr Buchan-Swanson's death was the second of the weekend, following the death of a cyclist on the Dunwich Dynamo ride on Satuday evening. In addition, a marshall of the Prudential RideLondon 100 is in hospital in a serious condition after being hit by a rider on the Epsom Road in Leatherhead. Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
