The annual climb to the top of the Stelvio Pass is the only time each year that you can do this climb on closed roads. The climb to the Stelvio Pass is one of the legendary routes in Italian cycling and has been frequently used in the Giro d´Italia, most recently in 2012. It has achieved legendary status among sportive cyclists because of its 48 hairpin bends to the summit on the north side. At 2,757 metres high it is the second highest paved climb in the Alps, second only to the Col d´Iseran which is just 13 metres higher. The pass is closed from 8am to 4pm and there is no entry charge to ride the Stelvio Pass for the day. You must start your descent by 3pm. A special T-shirt (costing 20 euros) is available for all those who take part and there is also a special cycling jersey made for the event which changes design each year. Roughly 8,000 people ride on Stelvio Bike Day each year. There is a strict policy of riding on the right hand side of the road and helmets are compulsory for all riders.
