Essex police are seeking witnesses after a cyclist on this year's RideLondon 100 sportive was hit by a car during the event.

The driver of the vehicle made off without stopping, leaving the cyclist with serious spinal injuries.

The incident took place on Sunday 26 May during this year's RideLondon-Essex 100. RideLondon is a closed road sportive, with the route closed to motor traffic for the duration of the event.

The cyclist was hit on Ongar Road in Fyfield at around 10.25am, around 34 miles into the 100-mile route. The car involved is reported to be a silver Ford Focus.

The driver left the scene, with the cyclist suffering four fractured vertebrae in the collision.

Essex Police said: "We believe there will be a significant number of people who will have witnessed what happened and we need them to come forward.
