This year's Etape Royale sportive has been cancelled, with organisers WildFox citing lack of sponsorship as the reason. The event was due to take place on 10 September.

In a statement on the event website, WildFox say: "The Etape Royale has been postponed for 2017 and both the 100 mile Closed Road Event and the 50 mile option will return in 2018.

"The Etape Royale has received overwhelmingly positive feedback since it was launched in 2015, but it is a very special sportive and isn't viable without significant sponsorship.

"We look forward to launching the 2018 Etape Royale and welcoming you back to this stunning and unique route."

Organisers hope the cancelled Etape Royale will return in 2018.

Established in 2015, the Etape Royale is billed as Scotland's first 100-mile closed road sportive. Based in the Aberdeenshire town of Ballater, the event features a choice of two routes - 100 miles and 50 miles - through Moray's famous whisky country, including a climb to Lecht ski resort.

WildFox are now seeking aponsorship for 2018.

David Fox-Pitt, the company's managing director, said: "This is a great opportunity to promote business, celebrate cycling and support communities in the north east of Scotland.

"We wish to thank the local community and volunteers for their welcome and continuing support. Together we have built a unique event, and although we are sorry to disappoint those wishing to ride this year we look forward to re-launching the sportive again very soon."
