Route and entry details for Vélo Birmingham, a major new closed roads sportive taking place on 24 September 2017, have been revealed at The Cycle Show currently taking place at the NEC.

The 100-mile route will start and finish in Birmingham city centre, with 15,000 riders visiting Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Staffordshire. The sportive will take place as part of the city's BikeFest, now in its third year. Entries will open at 8am next Thursday, 29 September and you can still pre-register via the event website.

The organisers have revealed that tens of thousands of people have pre-registered for a chance to enter the event early, suggesting it is likely to be a sell out. If the full allocation is taken up, Velo Birmingham will join the RideLondon-Surrey 100 (26,000 riders) and Velothon Wales (18,000 riders) to become one of the UK's three biggest closed roads cycling events - building on the success of events like the Marie Curie Etape Caledonia.

The price of entry for the inaugural Velo Birmingham has not yet been announced, but organisers have unveiled a number of perks including free event photos, domestiques, live music at the four rider pit stops (feed stations), training videos from GCN and a "big, chunky medal".

There will also be a KOM/QOM challenge at the 85-mile mark. The climb is on the outskirts of Belbroughton and looks likely to include an ascent of St Kenelm's Pass in the Clent Hills - a 2km climb with an elevation gain of 105m and an average gradient of 5.2%. The current KOM holder on Strava is Dicky B with a time of 4:14, while the QOm is held by Clare Grice with 5:10.
