This year's Girona Gran Fondo is set to go ahead with a new date of Saturday 10 October, organisers have confirmed.
The popular sportive, which includes an optional ascent of the famous Rocacorba climb, is part of the Girona Cycling Festival which this year will take place from 5-11 October 2020.
Both the festival and sportive have been postponed from their usual June slot in the calendar because of the ongoing impact of coronavirus. Restrictions have recently been eased in Spain, but the new dates allow riders more time to prepare and make travel arrangements.
Created and organised by Dave Welch and wife Saskia, Girona Cycling Festival is a week-long celebration of cycling in one of the sport's true European heartlands. Numerous current and former pro cyclists have made Girona their home, attracted by the charms of the historic city as well as the stunning countryside on Girona's doorstep.
The festival and sportive showcase both Girona and its surrounds to superb effect. We visited a few years ago, and the whole festival week is without doubt among the best sportive experiences you'll find anywhere.
A warm welcome awaits, and with hundreds of like-minded cyclists returning year after year to enjoy the daily social rides and open-air bars and meals, it's a great chance to make and renew acquaintances.
"Even with new dates, the festival will retain its traditional format and atmosphere, with riders having the opportunity to take part in the hill climb of Els Àngels (6th October), the unique nocturne criterium around the cobbled streets of old town Girona (8th October) and the 125km Gran Fondo (10th October)," confirms Dave.
"To add to the excitement, there is the option to add in the brutal Rocacorba climb on to the Gran Fondo route too. Add in group 'coffee' rides, meals and other social events and the festival is sure to be a hit with riders of all abilities."
Coronavirus havoc means October is fast shaping up to be the biggest sportive month of 2020. But if you can choose just one event, we'd highly recommend making the trip to Girona.
