If you're in the business of organising sportives, the current coronavirus lockdown is...not great news. British Cycling have suspended all affiliated events until 30 June, with the sportive calendar pretty much wiped out until at least July.
Creative solutions are called for, and one of the UK's biggest sportive companies, UK Cycling Events, has responded by launching the Ridgeway Rouleur Virtual Challenge.
It's a pretty simple concept: all you have to do is enter, then ride 54 miles on your turbo trainer over two weeks.
It's based on the Ridgeway Rouleur sportive, which was supposed to run this Sunday 29 March. And, just like a real sportive, finishers will get a personalised certificate and a medal for their efforts.
Entry is priced £10, or £5 without a medal, and UKCE will donate £2 from each entry to their charity partner Alzheimer's Research UK.
You'll need an indoor trainer to take part, with the ability to pair it to a training app over Bluetooth or ANT+.
We think it's a great idea. Yes, you could ride indoors for free - but if you can spare a tenner, it's a nice way to support a cycling company at a difficult time.
Head over to the UKCE website to enter: www.ukcyclingevents.co.uk.
UKCE will also be running a series of meetups on the virtual training app Zwift. To join in, open the Zwift companion app, tap more and then "Find Zwifters". Search for UKCE and add the team.
Sessions will last for an hour and are limited to 50 entries, but dont worry if you miss out - there's a packed daily programme of group rides and races on Zwift.
The next UKCE Zwift rides are:
- Friday 27 March - 7PM - Surrey Hills Loop
- Sunday 29 March - 9AM - Richmond Roller Coaster
- Monday 30 March - 12:30PM - Harrogate Circuit
- Tuesday 31 March - 7PM - Watopia Tempest Fugit
See you online!
