I can't be the only new parent and cyclist to have discovered that, besides mopping up bodily emissions, baby wet wipes are ideal for cleaning your bike after a ride. And it seems Crankalicious have cottoned onto this too; the UK brand have just launched KWIPE: a "matt detailer" that is basically just an oversize wet wipe in a sachet.

Just remember not to use these on your actual baby.
Just remember not to use these on your actual baby.

"There's nothing worse than rocking up to the local crit race, only to find that your bike has been spattered with road dirt and grime on the way to the track," explain Crankalicious, an example that seems at best a rather niche first-world problem.

Still, if the issue of slightly soiled crit bikes resonates with you then relief is at hand: the Carboniferous Matt Detailer KWIPE is designed to be taken on rides "without the hassle and weight of a bottle or cloth. Due to the KWIPE's convenient size, it is practical and easily fits into a jersey pocket or saddle bag."

The wipes work as a standalone cleaner, but of course they're also designed to complement other products in the Crankalicious range. "If your bike is caked in mud, for example, a simple spray of the Pineapple Express cleaner followed by the new Matt Detailer KWIPE will make any hardcore cross-bike look showroom new."

Given the bad press that wet wipes have had recently (if you missed it, their uncanny refusal to decompose is wreaking havoc on sewage systems and the natural environment), perhaps the main selling point of the KWIPES is that they are claimed to be completely biodegradable. Even the plastic wrapper is recyclable.

Tony Hetherington, Brand Manager of Crankalicious, said: "We're really excited to be launching the Carboniferous Matt Detailer KWIPE. It caters to the all-important need for cyclists to ensure sure their bikes ALWAYS look immaculate. By keeping their bikes clean, cyclists will be able to keep their machines looking pristine. The new KWIPE, much like the rest of our range, is easy to use, effective and environmentally friendly."

The Crankalicious Carboniferous Matt Detailer KWIPE is available in as a single sachet for 85p, five for £4, or a convenient box of 20 for £16.

That's obviously a lot more expensive than a pack of baby wipes - but maybe it's worth paying a bit more to keep the outdoors tidy? Your baby might thank you for it a few years down the line.

Although don't expect any thanks for changing all those nappies.
