Three-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome has had his bike destroyed by a hit-and-run driver in what appears to be a road rage attack.

In a post to his Twitter feed this morning, Froome says he is 'okay' after the incident - but a picture shows his mangled Pinarello Dogma lying on the pavement.

A tweet accompanying the photo reads: "Just got rammed on purpose by an impatient driver who followed me onto the pavement! Thankfully I'm okay. Bike totaled. Driver kept going!"

The Team Sky rider is believed to have been training near his home in the Alpes-Maritimes region in the south of France.

The attack follows the recent deaths of two high profile cyclists in road traffic incidents. Ultra-cyclist Mike Hall was killed in a collision during the Indian Pacific Wheel Race at the end of March, while former Giro d'Italia winner Michele Scarponi died after being hit by a van while on a training ride in April.
