Ribble Cycles has launched its new range-topping Ultimate SL model. At just 840g in size medium, the Ultimate SL is the lightest frame the brand has designed to date.

The new frameset means builds weighing well under the 6.8kg UCI limit are possible using Ribble's Bike Builder tool. And, as you might expect of such a svelte chassis, Ribble say "the Ultimate SL excels in racing and epic challenge rides in the hills and big mountains."

Aside from the impressively low weight, the frame features new carbon tube profiles that are aerodynamically designed to cut through the air. And, with its racing geometry and a short wheelbase, the Ultimate SL encourages riders to take a low, efficient and aggressive racing position.

An oversized bottom bracket shell and tapered head tube ensure your watts are transmitted efficiently, with Ribble saying the Ultimate is "stiff enough to sprint for victory as well as light enough to climb into the clouds."

While performance seems top of the list, comfort hasn't been overlooked either; the Ultimate SL's thin seat stays help build compliance into the rear triangle, while a 27.2mm seat post should help take the edge off the typical rugged road surfaces in the UK.

Available in a range of customisable Shimano or Campagnolo builds starting at £1,599, the Ultimate is a tempting proposition for riders looking for a superlight machine for road racing or setting down fast times in sportives.

James Dove, Product and Brand Director, says: "The Ultimate SL is our most ambitious bike yet. We've entered superlight territory with this frame and are really proud of what we've achieved.

"Our customers can now spec an incredibly light and quality build for immense value. Through over a year of designing, refining and testing, the Ultimate SL now sits proudly at the top of our range."

But hang on, isn't there another direct sales bike brand with an 'Ultimate' model at the top of their range?

If you're looking at Ribble's new bike and wondering whether it's intended as a direct competitor to Canyon's Ultimate CF SLX, you may well be right.

Ribble have recently expanded into Germany with the launch of Ribble.de, and even the 6-year warranty and 30-day no-questions-asked returns policy is identical to that offered by Canyon.

Have Ribble seen the recent success of the German brand and decided they'd like a piece of that action?

With two rival Ultimates now going head to head, it looks like it's game on...
