Motorcycle racing star Shane 'Shakey' Byrne will be taking part in the newest sportive through the Peak District to help raise money for local charity the Donna Louise Trust.

The Tour of the Potteries sportive takes place on Sunday 4 September and is supported by Fuchs Lubricants and Silkolene. Shane, who is one of the biggest names in British motorcycle racing, is looking forward to swapping his Ducati for a Trek road bike for the day.

Shakey is a keen cyclist and the Potteries sportive is a great way to get some quality miles in and help raise money for a local charity.

"Cycling is my main form of exercise and I love it," says Byrne. "I ride nearly every day and always take the bike with me to races so I can get some exercise and to switch off from the pressures of racing.

"I'll do short rides on race weekends but when free I've done 200+ mile rides in a day. It's great having an event to focus on and I'm looking forward to the Tour of the Potteries as there's some tough climbs on good routes - and it also helps out the local Donna Louise Trust charity as all proceeds go directly to it."

Shane Byrne is no stranger to cycling and has been known to ride 200 miles in a day.

Based at the company's UK headquarters in Hanley, the sportive will have three routes of varying distances, 150km, 100km and & 50km out into the Peak District. The courses will take in lots of famous landmarks and climbs such as the iconic Mow Cop (the toughest challenge on the long route) as well as Thorncliffe and Gun Hill, used in the Tour of Britain. Flash, the highest village in England, also features on the routes which are designed to cater for all abilities of cyclist from novice to elite.

Each route is fully supported with signage, mechanical back up, broom wagon service and feed stops. There is ample free car parking and changing facilities at the event headquarters in Hanley. Ride captains will be on hand for support on the short route and family rides. All entrants will receive a goody bag and snack on their return.

Bring the family

There will also be a free family ride on a virtually traffic free route close to the town named the Knotty after the old railway system of the Potteries. Some of the UK's top motorsport stars will be riding the event as well as their back up teams, and will be bringing their race vehicles and support trucks to show to the public at the Hanley Factory.

There will also be stunt shows taking place throughout the day, so bring the family for a friendly day out in the heart of the Potteries.
