Entries open midday today for the 2017 Coast to Coast in a Day sportive. Featuring a now classic route, the C2C is one of the country's toughest cycling challenges, riding 150 miles from Seascale to Whitby via the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

The 2017 edition takes place on Saturday 24 June. WIth an ascent of the notorious Hardknott Pass as a warm-up, followed by a ferry crossing of Windermere and over 100 miles of beautiful, varied scenery, the Coast to Coast in a Day ranks high among the best events in the UK.

Entry costs £75 including four well-catered feed stations en route and the Windermere ferry crossing. As usual places are expected to sell out within days (if not hours), so don't waste time in signing up for an iconic ride next summer.

Entries to the Wales in a Day sportive open at the same time, priced £100, and organisers Open Cycling are offering a 10% discount for signing up to both events at the same time.

Wales in a Day takes place on 22 July 2017, and if anything packs an even tougher challenge: the 190 mile route starts in Caernarfon in north Wales, trekking south via Llanberis and the Gospel Pass climbs before finishing in Chepstow.

"This ride is not the easiest on the calendar" notes the event website with a hint of understatement; but if you have the experience, why not sign up for a monumental day's riding that you'll never forget.

Entries for both one-day epics are via the Open Cycling website: www.opencycling.com.
