LONDON, UK - A protest calling for safer roads for cyclists around Kings Cross blocked the area last night, leading to major traffic jams throughout north London.
The Bikes Alive protest saw hundreds of cyclists as well as pedestrian road safety campaigns block the junction of the Euston Road and where Grays Inn Road turns into York Way. It was at this junction that 24 year old student Deep Lee was killed on October 3 last year and it is considered one of the most dangerous junctions for cyclists in London. A white "ghost bike" at the junction marks Lee's death.
The protest was against Transport for London who have acknowledged the junction is dangerous but refused to change it until after the Olympics. Cyclists shouted "Where are you Boris?" and handed out leaflets to pedestrians and motorists to explain why they were holding up traffic.
Police were needed to calm down angry motorists who resented being delayed during their evening commute. The protest lasted an hour and more protests are planned for coming weeks until Transport for London change their policy about the junction.
